Janis Joplin

Janis Lyn Joplin was born on the 19th of January 1943 in Texas. She began singing in the local choir and later took to the Blues sounds and folk music. Coming to prominence in the 1960’s, she was seen as a rebel, doing nothing to play it down with heavy drinking and drug binges. Over the years her intake of drugs was costing hundreds of dollars as well as friendships. She joined the band Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 which was later billed as Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company. With rumours that the band wasn’t happy with this new billing, she broke away, forming a new backing band, the Kozmic Blues Band, though this was short-lived and they broke up in 1969.

Janis began seeing Seth Morgan, a 21-year-old would-be novelist and drug user and they soon became engaged. On the 24th of August 1970 she moved into the Landmark Hotel while working on a new alumn. When she didn’t turn up at the studio, road manager, John Cooke went to the hotel to find her lying on the floor. She was pronounced dead from a drug overdose combined with alcohol.

Janis is said to haunt room 105 at the Hollywood hotel where she died from an overdose on the 4th of October 1970 at the young age of 27. At the time it was called the Landmark Hotel but has since changed its name to the Highland Gardens Hotel. She has also been seen in the lobby where it is believed that if you say her name out loud doors are slammed shut.
